Appearance
The Black lory is 32 cm (13 in) long and has a black bill. Its plumage is mostly black with a blue rump. Red markings on face, thighs, and tail vary between the three subspecies. Males and females are similar in external appearance.
Habitat
The Black lory is endemic to Indonesia, inhabiting open habitat and lowland forests of Western New Guinea and surrounding islands.
Behavior
Black lories are said to be amongst the gentlest and best natured of the lories. They are easily tamed. Their obvious drawback is the shrill cries they often emit. Not everybody can tolerate them.
Diet
In the wild, these birds thrive on a varied diet that consists of various seeds, fruits, coconuts and primarily, nectar.
Reproduction
The clutch size is two eggs. The incubation period is 24 days, although the first egg usually hatches after 25 days. Only the female incubates but most males spend long periods in the nest with the female. Newly hatched chicks weigh about 6g. They have whitish or pale grey down, dark brown beak and dank feet. Young spend ten or 11 weeks in the nest.
Lifespan of these animals 18-25 years.
In captivity
Black lory is a particularly hardy bird, adapting readily to a variety of conditions. To make the most out of their good health, you need to keep a few things in check. Besides the diet and a lot of social interaction, they’ll also need a lot of room to fly around. A lot of parrots around the world suffer due to cramped and unhygienic conditions. Please make sure your pet has plenty of space and a chance for free flight around the house, to ensure they are happy and healthy.
Their diet as pets should be centered around a quality commercial nectar. Providing a well-balanced diet will be a good foundation for your pet’s overall health.
Another important aspect of care is bathing. The best way to get your pet used to bathing is to fill up a bathroom sink with water and throw in your pet’s favorite toys in. Once they take their first bath they won’t be able to get enough of it.
